The formula
Effective DPI is the smaller of pixel width ÷ print width and pixel height ÷ print height. The smaller number controls because both dimensions must cover the print area.

DPI is not the same as sharpness. Motion blur, compression, poor focus, screenshots, and aggressive cropping can still produce a weak print even when the pixel math passes.
Before you print
- Use the original camera file whenever possible.
- Crop to the product's shape before judging the remaining pixels.
- Keep faces, names, and small text away from seams, handles, folds, and trim zones.
- Check the product-specific template; printable areas differ by item and size.
- Use the mockup as a composition check, not proof of final sharpness.

Photo print size questions
What DPI is best for a photo print?
Three hundred DPI at the final print size is a strong target for products viewed up close. Many products can still look good between 200 and 299 DPI. At 150 to 199 DPI, inspect the source carefully and consider a smaller print size or a sample.
How do I calculate DPI from pixels?
Divide pixel width by print width in inches, then divide pixel height by print height in inches. Use the smaller answer as the effective DPI because both dimensions must cover the print area.
Can I make a low-resolution photo printable?
You can reduce the intended print size, return to the original camera file, or choose a product with a smaller printable area. Upscaling may help some images, but it cannot reliably restore detail that was never captured.
Why does a screenshot print worse than the original photo?
Screenshots and social-media downloads are often resized and compressed. They may look acceptable on a phone while containing far fewer pixels and more compression artifacts than the original camera file.
Does 300 DPI guarantee a sharp print?
No. DPI describes pixel density at a chosen size. Focus, motion blur, lighting, compression, cropping, and the printing process also affect the result. Start with a genuinely sharp source image.
Should I use the full product size or the printable area?
Use the printable area supplied by the product template. A mug, hoodie, canvas, backpack, and phone case can have very different safe zones even when their overall physical dimensions look similar.
